Daphne, an 8th grader at Gavilan Peak School in Anthem, has always loved singing, from the family shows she put on as a child to the advance school choir and the church choir where she sings now. Music is part of her family heritage, and Daphne sings often with her mother and sister. She is passionate about singing, and it shows. When Daphne sang her audition, an Upscale Singer said she “got goose bumps listening.”
Jr. High Division
Keri Orcutt, Second place Keri, a 7th grader at Desert Arroyo Middle School, sings with her school chorus and with the Phoenix Children’s Chorus. In fact, this summer Keri will travel with PCC to perform in China! Keri’s first musical experience was playing the role of Gretl in Sound of Music at six years old. She has also sung with the Upscale Kids. Keri would love to pursue a career in singing, especially in Broadway musicals because she loves them so.
The Upscale singers are proud to award music scholarships to local students in an annual competition. This fall, over 40 students participated in the auditions, and ten junior and senior high students received over $3000. The moneys go directly to the vocal music teacher of the winner’s choice.
Allison Flayton, Third place Allison, a 7th grader at Sonoran Trails Middle School, is into cheerleading, theater, tennis -- and music! Her favorite memories include her first community theater role as Molly in Annie, and then having a solo in her school talent show. Allison loves to sing with her piano teacher or with karaoke on the computer. Allison’s family sings in the car, and Allison says she’s been raised on Broadway show tunes.
Maddie Lopez, Honorable mention Maddie is a 7th grader at Anthem Elementary School. She sings with her school chorus teacher, and with Jackie Hammond, founder of the Musical Theater of Anthem. Maddie says she had so much fun performing in “100 Years of Broadway” with the MTA. She also plays competitive basketball.
Joanna Richardson, Honorable mention Joanna, an 8th grader at Desert Arroyo Middle School, has been singing since she could speak! As a first grader, she sang “I’m proud to be an American” in her school talent show just after the 9/11 attacks. Joanna enjoys lots of sports with her family, and she shares her love of singing with her mom.
